How do you celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior? What Christmas tradition impacts or stretches you and your family the most?

"Y'all" makes me feel at home. I will start to worry if you start saying things like "didga" and "gofur dat." Anyway, have a great evening.

For youth ministry I tend to read spiritual development type books. Right now I am reading "Sabbath" by Walter Muller. I get most of my recommended reads from my network and the old, saintly women in my church. Outside of that I read lots of magazines, newspapers etc. try and keep up. My husband is a pop culture fanatic and keeps we up on movies, music etc. Once in a whild I throw in a mideval Christian mystic. My book group is reading caring for the me in mommy right now. I also like to read what my students are reading (Twilight...) so I can engage them in conversations right where they are in the moment. I read all kinds of things

Hey Vince... Glad to see you braved the Fire Storms in Yorba Linda. I have been praying for you and your community. As for your question, my study was once dominated by reading, memorizing, and acting out ministry strategy books. I am presently reading "Sustainable Youth Ministry" by DeVries. However, this is a once in a blue moon activity for me because its more about relationships and organization... not someone else's plan. Besides, I think I know and have tried every "double your youth ministry in 30 days" strategy in my 17 years of ministry. I spend the majority of time on spiritual development and cultural information to help me develop messages that are relevant to students and adults alike. I have read a few effective communication books lately just to remind me of some nuances to help me get my points across in effective ways with passion. Blogs seem to assume most of my reading time because of the immediacy of issues and new developments in the world and church. Tech books are very useful to a "geek-wanna be" like myself. I just can't seem to keep up with the tech. Thank the Lord that Tim Schmoyer, Tony Steward, and Chris Davis are twitter friends that help me glean a "better than basic" tech knowledge. Otherwise, give me the flannel-graph.

Here's a question for all of you Yoda type youth leaders???
Do you find yourself reading more books on ministry strategy, philosophy, theory, self-help or semiotics (study of the signs of the times)?
